About Eldercare Sash Ferguson

Sash Ferguson has a long and proud history in Mount Barker. The Mount Barker and District Homes for the Aged organisation was established in 1970 by a group of community minded people including members of the Apex and Rotary Clubs of Mount Barker.

Previously a dairy farm, the land on which the present facility lies belonged to Martha “Sash” Ferguson. In her will Sash indicated that she wanted the land used for charitable purposes for the benefit of the elderly in Mount Barker, and in 1974 the property was transferred to the Homes.

The residential care facility (formerly the Sash Ferguson Hostel) was built in 1986, and in 2003 it became an Eldercare facility. At this time the building was extensively extended and upgraded.

Community & Social Networks

Sash Ferguson is strongly grounded in the local community, and has strong links with community organisations, churches and business. Our staff, volunteers and residents participate in community events such as the Mount Barker Show, Mount Barker Christmas Pageant and Woolworths barbeque fundraisers.

Intergenerational programs are run with local schools and child care centres, with children visiting frequently to meet residents, assist in lifestyle programs and undertake work experience. Mount Barker TAFE offers school-based apprenticeships and placements through Sash.

Environment & Services

The enclosed courtyard at the centre of the facility provides a serene area for retreat or contemplation. Sash has large, park-like grounds, and a secure area is available for residents of our specialist memory unit.

The facility is strongly aligned with the Adelaide Hills Community Health Service at Mount Barker Hospital. Visiting dentists, podiatrist, doctors of choice and a seasonal menu overseen by a dietician add to the comprehensive facilities available.

Eldercare has three retirement living locations within Mount Barker, with one co-located with Sash. This enables some residents to have their spouses living in close proximity.

Staff & Volunteers

Most of our staff at Sash live in the local area and have been with us for many years, ensuring continuity of care. In addition, Sash has one of the largest and most active volunteer networks of any Eldercare facility.

Activities

A comprehensive range of lifestyle activities are regularly offered. These range from concerts and entertainment, music and sing-alongs, craft and gardening activities, pet therapy, communal birthday celebrations, cooking group, computer kiosk, gentle exercises and fun and physical games. We also celebrate cultural days and have a couple of large, special events each year. Residents and family members are all welcome to attend.
